The Celtic Knot inlay pattern designed and crafted for this instrument by
Don Gallagher gives this guitar a very special appeal.
Celtic knots are ornamental patterns that first became associated with
the early Celtic Church where they were used to decorate Bible
manuscripts, monuments, and jewelry. Knotwork tradition in manuscript
painting possibly came to Ireland in the middle of the 7th century.
Celtic knots are complete loops with no end or beginning.
These almost hypnotic interlaced knot patterns reflect the Celts belief
in the interconnectedness of all life. Some are so finely drawn, people
have called them “ the work of angels”.
These Celtic knot designs reflect the Gallagher Irish heritage. The
Gallagher family first moved to the Wartrace, Tennessee area from
Ireland in 1807.
The back and sides of this instrument are made of select
Brazilian Rosewood. For the top a highly bear clawed Sitka spruce was selected to
blend with the Celtic knot theme. The ebony headplate is inlayed with
the traditional Celtic Cross. Completing the Celtic knot theme are hand-engraved
gold-plated Waverly tuners. Maple is used to bind the entire guitar.
Abalone pearl is inlayed around the soundhole and purfling. The nut and saddle are
elephant ivory. The
elephant ivory bridge pins and end pin are inlayed with an abalone dot.
This instrument is signed and dated by Don Gallagher.
